Something is not behaving and I am not sure where to begin. What should I check first, and what information would help others help me?

Short answer: yes, and here is the supported path.

Open the relevant settings panel.
Make the change there rather than editing files.
Save, then reload to confirm.

Doing it this way means your change survives updates. Hand-editing files does not.

This matches my experience exactly. The hard part is staying consistent once the initial novelty wears off.
